See which specialties were the hardest to recruit and in highest demand for Spring 2020Finding the best candidates to fill certain specialty needs can already be a challenge, and those challenges might be magnified during a medical crisis. Some specialties are harder to recruit than others; it helps to identify those – along with specialties that are most in demand – so you can build your recruitment strategy and prioritize your search and resources if you have immediate needs, if recruitment is stalled or if you need to be ready to increase recruitment efforts as day-to-day responsibilities return to some form of normal.

PracticeLink develops a Physician Recruitment Index with information gathered quarterly by the PracticeLink system based on supply and demand of specialty jobs and specialists. The more jobs per candidate in the system, the more difficult recruiters may find the search for those specialties.

This quarter Oncology - Gynecological remained the hardest specialty to recruit, but Perinatal Medicine and Pediatrics - Allergy and Immunology climbed to No. 2 and No. 5. There were also new specialties added to the list this quarter: Neuromuscular Medicine (Neurology), Pediatrics - Dermatology, Neurology - Geriatric, Oncology - Medical, Pediatrics - Anesthesiology and Radiology - Neuro-Interventional.

The most in-demand specialties also saw some changes with Geriatric Medicine not only being new to the list this quarter, but also serving as the hardest to recruit of the in-demand specialties. The other 14 specialties remain the same from the previous quarter, minus Urgent Care.

Did you recently see these same trends in your recruitment? In what specialties have you had the most difficulty recruiting? You may not have openings in these specialties – or may not be actively recruiting –  right now, but as you look to build your strategy and plan for the future, keep these trends in mind so you can develop a proactive approach to your recruitment of specialty positions.
