When I think of Memorial Day, a few things come to mind right away:
- Oh no! My kids will be home every day for the next 2.5 months
- Bring on summer! I’m ready for the pool and some sunshine
- Family time and BBQs
But, as we all know, there’s MUCH more to it than that. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Did you know it was originally called Decoration Day? This name came from soldiers decorating the graves of their fallen comrades with flowers, flags, and wreaths. Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880’s and is now observed on the last Monday in May with Congressional passage of the National Holiday Act of 1971.
As you celebrate this Memorial Day, be sure to give thanks for those who have served and perished while defending our great nation, so that we can be free.
Happy Memorial Day!
