Which of the following physician recruitment activities do you prefer: reading a CV, having a quick phone conversation, or interacting face-to-face with physicians over food and drinks?

I know which I would choose!

Physician career fairs are a popular, important recruitment tactic that puts physician recruiters in front of multiple job-seeking candidates.

To make the most of your career fair experience, here are 5 ways to stand out from the competition.

1. Maximize your time

  • Set up early
  • Don’t break down early
  • Plan your meal time

Physicians have hectic and demanding schedules. Sometimes they have to come a little early or very close to the end of the career fair. Make sure you set up on time, and don’t break down early. The perfect match for your organization may be an early or late arrival.

At PracticeLink Live! physician career fairs, recruiters are encouraged to enjoy the food and drinks provided. But to make the most of your face-to-face time with physicians, you may want to plan to eat between 6:30-7 p.m., when many physicians choose to attend the optional "When to Do What in Your Job Search" seminar.

2. Nail your first impression

  • Dress to impress
  • Wear your nametag
  • Make your interaction memorable

You’re representing your organization at a physician career fair, and both your appearance and your mannerisms should reflect the professionalism you’re looking for in a candidate.

3. Stand out (and up) from your competition.

  • Make your booth attractive
  • Make your booth informative
  • Stand up!

Your booth should be clean and eye-catching. You should have plenty of literature and business cards. Some recruiters choose to offer giveaways for physicians, too.

Standing up is also important. Doing so makes it easier to be enthusiastic and approachable, and makes for an excellent first impression.

4. Practice your elevator pitch

  • Make it quick but impactful

Can you eloquently describe your company culture and the position you have available in 60 seconds or less? That’s your goal. You need to convey all of the important details while romancing the benefits of working for your company. I’m not talking about bonuses or vacation time. I’m talking about the community, the work-life balance, and the culture that exists inside of your organization.

TIP: Learn more about what goes into an elevator pitch at PracticeLink University’s recruiter workshop, included for all exhibitors from 1:30-4 p.m. before each career fair. Attendees will earn credit toward their ASPR recertification.

5. Follow up!

  • Don’t wait!

Don’t hesitate to follow up with physicians immediately after the fair. Let them know you’re interested before your competition does!
